How to Support Local Firefighters: 8 Ways to Help Today
Firefighters and first responders show up on the worst day of someone's life. If you've ever wondered how to give back, here are eight concrete ways to support local firefighters — starting today.
1. Donate to a 501(c)(3) foundation that serves firefighters
A recurring or one-time gift to a registered nonprofit like the Firefighters Care Foundation (EIN 41-3310497) goes directly to sick children, injured first responders, and families facing hardship. Every donation is tax-deductible in the U.S., and even $10–$25 a month adds up to meaningful, sustained relief.
2. Sponsor or attend a fundraiser
Local firefighter fundraisers — pancake breakfasts, boot drives, benefit dinners, raffles — depend on ticket buyers and sponsors to hit their goals. Buying a ticket, sponsoring a table, or getting your business logo on an event helps more than you might think.
3. Volunteer your time
Setup crews, kitchen help, registration tables, silent auction runners, photographers — nonprofit events run on volunteers. Reach out to your local firefighter foundation or department auxiliary and ask what's coming up.
4. Support your local fire department directly
Send a thank-you card, drop off coffee or a meal at the station, or attend an open house. Ask your municipality about funding levels for equipment, training, and mental-health resources — public advocacy matters as much as private giving.
5. Give to injured firefighter and line-of-duty relief funds
When a firefighter is injured or killed in the line of duty, family relief funds spring up fast. Verify the fund is administered by a legitimate charity, department, or IAFF local before giving.
6. Support the families of first responders
Firefighting is hard on families. Programs that help with childcare, holiday gifts for kids of injured responders, or scholarships for firefighter families are consistently underfunded. Ask your local foundation which family programs need support.
7. Donate goods and services in-kind
Restaurants can donate meals for training days, printers can donate event materials, and businesses can donate raffle items or gift cards. In-kind contributions to a registered 501(c)(3) may also be tax-deductible — keep a receipt.
8. Spread the word
Share fundraisers on social media, forward newsletters to friends, and tell your employer about workplace giving or matching-gift programs. Awareness is one of the highest-leverage things you can do at zero cost.
